    • Millions of Americans are out of work and turning to unemployment benefits to make ends meet in April and May because of Coronavirus.
    • Unemployment benefits are determined by state, but the federal government is adding $600 per week to benefits until July 31.
    • Business Insider collected data from the US Department of Labor to calculate the maximum unemployment benefit available in each state, including the added federal benefit.

On the single week ending on April 4, over 6.6 million people were out of work and unemployed, and many turned to state governments for help. States are struggling to keep up with rising demand for unemployment assistance.

During the coronavirus pandemic, the federal government will add to the amount that unemployed Americans are compensated. Under the CARES Act, signed into law on March 27, any eligible unemployed person will receive both regular unemployment benefits as outlined by states, and an additional $600 per week from April 5, 2020 until July 31, 2020. The law also gives unemployment benefits to many who wouldn’t usually have them, including gig workers who aren’t classified as employees.

That additional money is nearly double what the average unemployed American would receive otherwise. According to data from The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the average unemployment benefit in America was $387.

Unemployment benefits range widely by state. The maximum benefit in Massachussetts is over $1,800 per week, but Alabama’s maximum is $875 per week, including the federal benefit. While sometimes based on cost of living, it’s not always closely aligned: An unemployed person in expensive California might receive a maximum of $1,050 per week (including the federal bonus), but a person in Nebraska might receive up to $1,040. Every state has a different way of calculating benefits, and not everyone will receive the maximum amount.

Business Insider collected data from the US Department of Labor on the minimum and maximum unemployment benefits available by state. To find the maximum weekly benefit, the additional $600 was added to the maximum amount available weekly from each state. To find out more about what unemployment benefits are available in your state, visit your state’s unemployment website.
